As the demand for renewable energy continues to grow, the Netherlands is seeing a surge in large-scale solar projects. KiesZon, a trailblazer in the renewable energy sector, joined forces with Alfen, a leader in smart energy solutions, to bring Solar Park Hazenwinkel in Mierlo to life. This ambitious solar park boasts a capacity of 18.4MWp, generating approximately 17.7 million kWh of green electricity annually—enough to power over 7,000 households. Through close collaboration, Alfen and KiesZon ensured a reliable and efficient connection to the Dutch electricity grid.

Overcoming challenges with innovation

Spanning 18 hectares—the equivalent of 25 football fields, with 11 hectares covered in solar panels—Solar Park Hazenwinkel demanded innovative solutions to ensure the efficient and reliable transfer of its energy to the grid. Adding to the complexity was the site’s marshy terrain, which posed unique challenges for installing transformer stations and cables. Alfen tackled this head-on, deploying a specialised tracked crane and working closely with KiesZon to deliver a seamless installation. Despite these hurdles, the project was completed smoothly.

Smart solutions for a robust grid connection

To facilitate the integration of Solar Park Hazenwinkel, Alfen delivered a customised Altro 1B walk-in station and four Diabolo 40H transformer substations, each with a capacity of 3,500kVA. These transformer substations efficiently convert the low voltage generated by the solar panels into medium voltage, enabling safe and reliable transport of electricity to the grid. Approximately 3 kilometers of medium-voltage cables were installed, with Alfen’s Smart Grid Solutions team providing tailored expertise to ensure a stable and secure grid connection.

“At KiesZon, we greatly value the collaboration with our supplier of compact stations,” said René Compier, Project Manager B2B at KiesZon. “Their reliability and expertise are key to the success of our projects. The cooperation and communications with Alfen has been both professional and pleasant, making them a trusted partner we can count on.”

Delivering a complex installation in record time

The marshy conditions at the site could have posed significant delays, but thanks to Alfen’s use of a specialised tracked crane, the installation remained on schedule. Additionally, close coordination between Alfen and grid operator Enexis ensured a seamless grid connection—critical to the uninterrupted supply of renewable energy.

Building blocks for a sustainable future

Solar Park Hazenwinkel now generates around 17.7 million kWh of green energy annually, offsetting thousands of tons of CO₂ emissions. It highlights the pivotal role of solar energy in the Netherlands and underscores the importance of reliable medium-voltage solutions. It also serves as a strong foundation for future large-scale solar initiatives, advancing the country’s transition to a more sustainable energy landscape.
