E-mobility is a key solution for sustainably reducing CO2, fine dust and noise emissions. Alfen partner Parkstrom is dedicated to this mission. In an eye-catching project, Parkstrom planned and installed the charging infrastructure for MOIA’s Hamburg Stellingen depot, optimised by Alfen’s Smart Charging Network technology.

Challenge

With many years of experience, Parkstrom offers advice, installs and operates EV charging infrastructure in Germany. The company also oversees the calibration and measurement, law-compliant billing of charging processes in public and semi-public areas.

“Our goal is to contribute to the electrification of road traffic by creating intelligent EV charging infrastructure,” says Stefan Pagenkopf-Martin, Parkstrom CEO. “High quality EV charging infrastructure allows for safe, quick and easy charging for all electric car drivers.”

This is what Parkstrom is now doing for MOIA, a ride-sharing service that operates a battery-electric fleet of cars for up to 6 passengers in the cities of Hamburg and Hanover.

Solution

In its Hamburg Stellingen depot, MOIA needed a ‘flexible’ installation to allow EVs to move freely on the ground floor. They ordered 82 Alfen Eve Single Pro-line charging stations. The variety of hardware, effective Smart Charging Network (SCN) and easy connection of a cable dispenser system, instead of a fixed cable, were crucial factors to success.

Metal frames

MOIA’s wish: to hang some charging stations on a metal frame from the ceiling and connect the wallbox with a cable management system – a unique concept to ensure the cars wouldn’t collide with the stations or cause damage to cars. Plugs are pulled down with a rope. All charge points are optimised by Alfen’s SCN to evenly distribute the available power capacity among cars and users.

Ceiling-mounted wallboxes

The most important part of the project was creating a construction and cable management system for the ceiling-mounted wallboxes and installing the plug – also hanging from the ceiling –  at just the right position for the drivers while guaranteeing easy access and accident-free driving lanes.

Implementation

The complete journey, spanning from the initial planning to its ultimate completion, was accomplished within a maximum of 4 months. The commissioning was real teamwork: MOIA (backend connection), Parkstrom (setup network and SCN) and an installation partner (electrical commissioning) collaborated to ensure the project's success. Parkstrom and MOIA have completed 3 more sites with Alfen’s charging equipment.

“Alfen offers a variety of hardware such as a socket and a cable version together with a simple but effective SCN across the entire Alfen product family, which makes it easy to integrate different hardware types. There’s more to come in the future,” concludes Stefan Pagenkopf-Martin.
